Site of the execution of Royalist Generals after the Siege of Colchester by the Parliamentarian forces. Just to the south of the Norman Castle that is built on top of the remains of the Roman Temple .

Kate Burton

Fantastic museum telling the story of Colchester from pre-Roman people up until the world wars. Loved it and would definitely go back. Lots of cool tech and the displays are easy to read and enjoy.

More than a castle . There are some fascinating exhibits on Colchester's history including the Fenwick roman jewellery hoard. Plus excellent interactive exhibits to keep the kids entertained.

Mark Lee

Norman Castle constructed on top of Roman Temple and making much use of Roman brick. Surrounded by a pleasant park . Sadly not free to enter Museum and extra to visit Temple Foundations .

downside: you have to pay. Good points: going on the "pay extra" tour of the Norman Castle and into the Roman vaults what remains of the Roman Imperial Temple of Claudius. Rich history of Colchester.

Thom B

Perfect place to explore Colchester's history in this Norman castle built on Roman foundations . The interior has recent been renovated and makes for a great experience for young and old.

Billy Sayers

Good use of of an old shell of a Norman keep. Plenty of interesting and interactive exhibits for kids. Covers Norman , medieval and Roman periods.

despite the museum being closed this year, keep an eye out for events being hosted. i've just attended a beer festival . next up are a zombie invasion night and vintage clothing faire .

Very good coverage of how Colchester evolved, well designed and kid friendly , well worth the visit

Chris Hopkins

Not sure why some think it's a Roman Castle , the Romans didn't build castles ! It's a the largest Norman Keep in Europe, and one of Colchester's best attractions !

megan fowler
