This place is a hidden gem and embodies the 'Keep Austin Weird ' vibe. The artist is a unique man who is proud of his junk kingdom. Just be sure to call ahead, visits are now by appointment only.
After struggles with the city over building permits, Junk King Vince Hannemann's 33-foot-high, 60-ton art installation is back to delight and stimulate the senses.
Probably one of the weirdest and yet most amazing places to visit in Austin. I don't know how I can describe this place without using pictures!
Vince Hanneman began building this structure of random supplies in 1988 in his backyard . Now, the towering structure sees visitors from around the world daily.
Get an appointment , Park on St Elmo and bring a $10 donation . You won't regret it
Wonderful wacky place, just remember to be respectful to Vince 's neighbors. He has had some issues with zoning in the past, and we want the cathedral to remain in all its glory.
Now by appointment only, but the guy is pretty nice and still might let you in if you're polite
If you want to know what makes Austin "weird ", this is definitely it :) It's in someone's backyard so call ahead first, but the guy is super nice and accommodating
If you want to know what Austin "weird ", this is definitely it :) It's in someone's backyard so call ahead first, but the guy is super nice and accomodating
If you see Vince , the architect of madness, give him a hello. Most would be surprised to find that he had no blueprints for his Frankenstein's monster cathedral , but that's what makes it weird!
Pretty trippy work! its worth a drop in. its $10/group. One of the many attractions of Austin that keeps Austin Weird !
A residential gem in South Austin, an overgrown backyard filled with a literal mountain of artfully stacked and twisted junk that has been continually added to and morphed since 1989.
It's no longer open to the public at all times, you have to call ahead and make an appointment !
This place is amazing! It's by appointment only now and he asks for a $10 donation per group. Well worth it!
Couldn't get a tour because it's by appointment now. But looking from afar reminds of that scene from Harriet the spy... For all you 90's babies
Hands down the coolest thing you can do / see / experience FOR FREE in Austin! Go at night! The lights will be on, and this will be supercool as it gets darker at earlier hours!
Such a neat place to visit once you've seen all the typical Austin sights.
This is one of those things that you just have to do in Austin. A visit to Vince and the Cathredral of Junk is unlike anything you have ever experienced. I remember watching my Dad (a big guy) walki
You will never forget your visit to this artistic display of junk!
Unlike most of the cathedrals I’ve been in, this one seems far more tolerant of pet howler monkeys.
Don't block mailboxes when parking ! And bring and ID to leave to be put up in the cathedral !
The most amazing creation ever!!
Compiled over the decades from other’s junk, this backyard Austin treasure is two-stories of structural wonder.
Very cool weird place to visit in Austin:)
Come see 'Tis Pity She's a Whore presented by Seven Towers Theatre . Suggested donation-$15. June 22-July 15.
The dog means business. Beware flying headbutts.
We now call this "hoarding." Some people still call it art .
Good all the way to the third floor! :-)
The owner wouldn't let us in because we "didn't have an appointment " even though he was obviously showing another group around ????????
Go here and bring a stereo camera .
Sign the surfboard!
Take the kids!
Vince is a great guy - be sure to drop a donation in his box!!
You've got to see it to believe it. Honestly.
take a camera
Good JUNK ¡¡¡
Great selection of contemporary local artists. - Lulu McAllister
Here's a find. CoLab hosts experimental performances (a fish funeral, interactive screenprinting), installations, and video art exhibits. Events typically happen on Saturdays and Sundays. - GOOD
Delicious coffees and teas. The line gets a little crazy as it has become a tourist spot with the mural, but definitely worth it! - Paige C
Very beautiful place with picturesque view. Our friend had a wedding ceremony there. However very hot and no place to hide from sun :) be prepared for rocky ground, you'll need very comfortable shoes - Анна Коршенко
