The existing wall was started by the Ming Dynasty in 1370. It encircles a much smaller city of 14 square kilometres (5.4 sq mi). The wall measures 13.7 kilometres (8.5 mi) in circumference, 12 metres (39 ft) in height, and 15–18 metres (49–59 ft) in thickness at the base.

The wall is 14km long, so it’s a tough walk on a hot day. Luckily, you can spring for a golf cart tour with stops at the East and South gates for pictures.
The total length is about 14 km. Walking the whole circle around the city will take you about 3 hours. Do it and look down on both sides to see what's going on in the city and in the City Wall Parks .

We didn’t get a chance to up the wall. $54 rmb per person. Best to go earlier in the day to enjoy. We were there around 4:30 and it closed at 6 at the north gate. South Gate is open very late

Rent a bicycle for ¥45 (¥200 refundable deposit ) and cycling around the City Wall takes about 2 hours leisurely ride. Enjoy the City view from higher elevation . It's worth it :-)
Walking the most interesting sections proved more informative than biking the entire length. There are very historic districts in certain areas

Rent a bike and ride on top of the wall, all the way around. At this time, 40 yuan for entrance to wall, 40 yuan for 100 minute bike rental . 200 yuan deposit, refunded when bike returned.
For a fee you can bike or golf cart the full 13.74 km of the wall. There didn't seem to be much to see or do other than walk the wall. There is a nightly show at the main gate however.

Oct 2015 update. 45y for 120mins for single bicycle . 200 deposit. Not that strict about passport as ID. There is also tandem bicycle rental . There is also now an electric cart.
