The Lion Monument is a sculpture hewn in 1820–21. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. The American writer Mark Twain praised the sculpture of a mortally-wounded lion as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world." (src: wikipedia)

Inscribed: "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss". Mark Twain described as:"the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world". I believe he was right
It's possible to visit at night - minus the crowds, bathed in soft light , you'll likely have it all to yourself to soak in.
This was one of my most memorable visits in Switzerland! The lion has such history, and the sheer size of the sculpture is amazing! This is a must see, besides the Lucern Lake and the chocolate !
The monument was dedicated to Swiss Guards who died in 1792 during the French Revolution when revolutionaries attacked the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
Is a must see monument when travelling to Lucerne. Just impressive how detailed it was carved into the rock.
To avoid large hordes of people, come at night!
Go there late in the morning to avoid group tourists so the place will be all yours 😬
It is quite an impressive and touching historic site . A must see in Lucerne.
It's a little off the shopping path but bring something to eat and enjoy sitting in front of the pool as you look at the monument .
Definitely worth the (short ) trek to go see it. Impressive stone work.
Place is in a quiet park , it was in renovation when I was there
read the story behind the monument it's very sad

There's a scruffy old cat that walks around here hoping you'll throw it some food. Kinda reminds us of the lion in its scruffiness.
Soul stirring. Must-visit when in Lucerne.
