I came here by accident, but it was neat. The gardens are separate and charge.
Watch "Roanoke" at the visitors center to learn the background of the Roanoke voyages and Sir Walter Raleigh's efforts to colonize the area.
Make sure to check out the Spanish Moss outside the visitor 's center, it's the most informative part of the entire site.
The introductory film is a good place to start.
During the summer go enjoy the outdoor play, The Lost Colony.

Bring bug spray if you go on a hike , lots of bugs
