Definitely make the trip to the top of Lava Butte , but do that after visiting the nearby visitor 's center. The view is really quite good from the top, but it's much more meaningful with the background
The lava road is out in the sun, so bring water. I'd recommend walking for age 5 and up. Younger than that, you'll want to have a car go up or plan to carry, it is not excruciating but is an 8% grade.
There isn't an actual trail to the highest viewpoint, so you'll walk along the (not busy) lava road to the top. You will need to obtain time-based (ex. 11:15 you are allowed to drive up) view passes.
Great visitors center, neat walk through the lava flow , great views from on top of the butte !
If you ever have the chance to visit here and enjoy geology, this is a great place to visit!
Very cool new National Forest !

Very neat! You can rent lanterns from the Forest service to explore the caves! It is just amazing to think how old the caves are! - Lynda Clark
